Puppy Housebreaking

Puppy housebreaking is something every new dog owner will have to face. This is not a difficult task and should be handled with a positive attitude. Your puppy doesn't know right from wrong until you teach them. Scolding during the training will lead to your puppy developing a fear which will make the house training process longer. Instead, praise your puppy for doing the right thing every time they do a good job.

The most important thing to remember is put your puppy on a routine. Scheduling your puppies activities like meals and bedtime, puppies wake time and even naps. Dog's are creatures of habit and learn very quickly from routine. After playtime, naps, awaking, and before bed, make sure to take your puppy out to potty. When puppy housebreaking go outside with your puppy and have a designated spot you take the puppy to every time they go potty. Once they go, praise them and let them know you are pleased.

The use of a crate can help to speed up the puppy housebreaking process. Dog's are den animals and don't like to soil their bedding. Make sure you get a crate that has just enough room for your puppy to lay down and turn around; too much room and they will use one side for a potty and the other to sleep. At some time in your dog's life they will probably need to use a crate (vet, groomers, or airlines all use them).

While puppy housebreaking, expect some accidents, clean them up with a good cleaner (water and vinegar work good), don't scold your pup for it, instead keep a better eye on them and take them out more often. If you catch them in the "act" grab them by the scruff of the neck (like mom would) and take them outside, continue with the puppy housebreaking.
