Basic Pug Training
Basic Pug training begins with the understanding that, as Pug owner, you must be firm but loving. Pugs are a very sensitive breed often in tune with their owner's feelings. This makes it easy for them to sniff out a weak owner. Don't let the endearing Pug face damage your training efforts.
Many Pug owners fail to understand that a lack of basic training can actually put the Pug at risk! Pugs are naturally curious and, unless properly training, will explore their surroundings without regard for dangerous situations. Take ownership of Pug training and teach them how to behave as well as their role in the pack. Pugs have a stubborn personality but beneath the tough exterior is a strong desire to please its master. A well-trained Pug is within reach if you have patience, dedication, and consistency.
Mental toughness is also a requirement if you want to be successful at training a Pug. Pugs think they are a member of the family with equal rights. If you give your Pug special privileges, such as jumping up on the couch or the freedom to ignore commands, then the upper hand in obedience training is sacrificed.

While Pugs won't be running alongside you in a marathon any time soon, they will get mischievous if you don't provide an outlet for their rambunctious energy. Free Homemade Dog Food Recipes
The current crisis in our pet food supply has many of us looking for homemade dog food recipes for our beloved pets. I have been cooking for our dog for many years and find that he likes mostly the same foods that we do. Each animal has his own preferences, just like we do. For instance, our Oscar will not eat tomatoes, but Bonnie loves them. Use these recipes as a starting place for homemade dog food recipes. Then, as you discover your pets preferences you can customize them more. One caution: you should not serve onion or chocolate to dogs as they contain substances that can be toxic to dogs.
Some veterinarians prefer raw meat for our pets. I prefer to cook the meat because of concerns over E Coli and other bacterial contamination. If you wish to use raw meat, do not use ground meat. The grinding process increases the possibility of contamination by providing more surface area for the bacteria to grow.
Canine Meat and Grain Menu
2 cups cooked brown rice
2/3 cup Lean beef
2 teaspoons lard -- or veggie oil
1/2 cup vegetables -- no onion*
Mix all together. You can serve the beef raw if you use chunks of beef. Do not serve ground beef raw, the grinding process increases the chances of bacterial contamination. Use any vegetables you like. You will find over time that your dog will leave any vegetables he does not like. Mix the above. Serve slightly warm, but not hot.
Chow Chow Chicken
You must remove the meat from the bones in this recipe. Chicken bones can easily splinter and cause choking problems in dogs.
2 chicken thighs -- or white meat
1 stalk celery -- sliced thick
3 carrot -- peeled and halved
2 small potatoes -- peeled and cubed
2 cups rice -- uncooked
Place chicken pieces in large pot. Cover with cold water (5 -6 cups). Add carrots, celery, and potatoes to water. Add salt to taste if you want. Cover and simmer on low heat about 2 hours until the chicken becomes tender. Add the rice, cover and cook over low heat for about 30 minutes until the rice is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed. Remove soup from heat. Pull the chicken meat off the bone ( it will practically fall off), discard bones. Return shredded pieces to pot. Stir well. Let cool. Store in the refrigerator or freeze.
Meaty Dog Biscuits
Use beef, chicken or lamb strained baby food for these biscuits.
2 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup powdered milk
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 egg
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
8 to 10 tablespoons water
2 jars baby food meat, strained
Mix all ingredients together and knead for 3 min. Roll out to about 1/2 inch thick. Use a dog bone shaped cookie cutter, and place biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 min.
Makes approximately 2 dozen doggie biscuits
Bacon Bites for Dogs
6 slices cooked bacon -- crumbled
4 eggs -- well beaten
1/8 cup bacon grease
1 cup water
1/2 cup powdered milk -- non-fat
2 cup graham flour
2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup cornmeal
Mix ingredients with a strong spoon; drop heaping tablespoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet. Bake in a 350 oven for 15 minutes. Turn off oven and leave cookies on baking sheet in the oven overnight to dry out.
Ace's Favorite Cheesy Dog Biscuits
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/4 cups grated cheddar cheese
1/4 pound margarine -- corn oil
1 clove garlic -- crushed
1 pinch salt
1/4 cup Milk -- or as needed
Grate the cheese into a bowl and let stand until it reaches room temperature. Cream the cheese with the softened margarine, garlic, salt and flour. Add enough milk to form into a ball.
Chill for 1/2 hour. Roll onto floured board. Cut into shapes and bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until slightly brown, and firm.
Makes 2 to 3 dozen, depending on size.

Tick Prevention Tips For Pug Dogs
The beginning of spring marks the time when Pug owners everywhere should be ready to protect their dogs from ticks.
Known scientifically as "Rhipicephalus Sanquineus", these blood-sucking bugs can carry disease as well as cause discomfort in our Pug dogs. In fact, ticks can infect humans with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, cause paralysis, and can even kill our precious Pugs.
Quite simply, ticks are parasites that live on the blood of their victims. Ticks have been blamed for causing the spread of disease among both people and dogs. They were shown to be behind the famous mass deaths of military dogs during the Vietnam War.
Although it's really true that a bug is a bug, it's also true that there is some variety in the specific kinds of ticks such as the brown tick, the wood tick, the black tick and several more. One of the things in common is the fact that all ticks are very resistant to typical insect poisons, and this makes them very hard to control.
This can really gross people out, but it's absolutely true that a female tick can produce several thousand eggs - yuck! They usually lay their eggs under the carpet, in a little whole in the baseboard, or some other dark and out-of-the-way place. Ticks lay their eggs in a safe place but never on the body of their victim. Once the eggs hatch after a month or so, they turn into larvae. Tick larvae seek out their first host, where they'll suck down some blood and then detach to go find a place to hide out.
A few weeks later, the tick larvae transform themselves into nymphs, which are sort of like teenagers. These nymphs looks for another host to grab some more blood, then fall off to rest again. Then, after another few weeks, the nymph transforms into an adult tick. Of course, now the adult tick is ready to seek out another host like a Pug, where it will fill up on blood and mate.
Adult ticks can live for up to 2 years without eating...which is really bad news for Pug dog owners, as this means you can have ticks lurking in ambush.
A tick outside will look for a hunting ground, which means getting up into some low-hanging branches or into a pile of leaves. This becomes the launching pad for the tick when an unsuspecting Pug dog comes along for a potty break or just running by in play. The tick will literally launch itself and jump up to several feet to land onto its victim.
Once in your home, ticks will emerge from beneath rugs and carpeting, climb walls, table and chairs, and even up as high as wall pictures, to await the passing of a Pug. They may even have to wait up to six months, but a tick can instantly sense the approach of a Pug and jump on it as it passes.

Oodles of Doodles
A "doodle" is a cross between a poodle and another breed. Poodles are considered great for cross-breeding with other types of dogs because they are intelligent, make great family pets and have a non-shedding hypoallergenic coat. These days doodles are popping up everywhere - and some of them (like those on our list) have some pretty humorous names.
Goldendoodle
This is a crossbreed between a golden retriever and a standard poodle. For some strange reason, many goldendoodles actually grow larger than either their golden retriever or standard poodle parents!

Pug Health Alert - Protect Your Pug Against These Common Conditions
Many dog owners lose their precious Pugs when it could have been easily avoided.
As a Pug parent, you should be well informed of this special breed's common fatal diseases or conditions and their corresponding symptoms.
Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE)
Every Pug owner dreads this disease which is exclusive to this breed. A Pug afflicted with PDE means that its brain has become swollen or inflamed.
Symptoms: Seizures, loss of muscle coordination, pacing in circles, unusually violent behavior (barking and biting), and restlessness are the most obvious symptoms of PDE. Another telltale sign is when they press their head against a hard surface, indicating that they are in agonizing pain. Watch out for these symptoms in Pugs between 2-3 years old. PDE can cause sudden death if not treated at its early stage.
Heatstroke
Pugs are susceptible to heatstroke because of their thick skin. Be on the lookout for these possible signs of heatstroke especially during the summer months.
Symptoms: Rapid breathing, excessive thick saliva or dry mouth, vomiting and loss of balance, are some of the signs of a fatal heatstroke in Pugs. These symptoms along with fever (103 degrees Fahrenheit or 39 degrees Celsius and above) and vividly red tongue and gums confirm that you should bring your Pug to the vet immediately.
Poisoning or Allergy
Probably the most overlooked cause of death in dogs in general is poisoning and allergies. Your Pug could be a victim of poisoning or extreme allergic reactions due to a number of things such as dog food, antifreeze, medications, shampoo, household chemicals, plants or even fabric.
Symptoms: Rush your Pug to the vet if it begins to exhibit breathing difficulty, chronic wheezing or coughing, severe watery eyes, excessive scratching, sudden hair loss or falling hair, vomiting and diarrhea.

A common cause of fatality in Pugs is severe heartworm infestation. This type of parasite is deadly as it invades the major organs which include the heart and lungs. One of the best breeds for family dogs because they are good with both the young and old. Our pug Martini loves elderly people and young children alike. If you have a Pug and take it out somewhere expect everyone to stop, pet, and ooh and awe. Pugs are extremely intelligent, happy as can be, and lovey lap puppies.
It is said that a Pug will mirror their owners personality - if you're a couch potato they're a couch potato. If you're active and out and about the Pug will want to be your traveling sidekick.

AKC Pug Standards - Is Your Pug Up to Breed Standards?
As with other breeds, the AKC Pug standards are clearly defined. However, not every pug falls withint the guidelines. Of course, this has little meaning unless you plan to show or breed your pug. Here are the AKC pug standards:
A pug will have the general appearance of being square and the length of the dog must be equal to or less than the height of the dog.

The Royal Pug
People love Pugs! There is something about that rogue-like face that tugs at your heart strings. This dignified toy breed is loved by royalty and commoners alike. These loving, intelligent, little clowns are extremely popular and ranked 12th out of 154 dog breeds registered by the American Kennel Club in 2005. The Pug is the largest of the Toy Dog Group weighing in a whopping 14 to 18 pounds.
The Pug has a fascinating history and one that is somewhat controversial. No one disputes that the English painter William Hogarth owned Pugs and portrayed them many times in his paintings. For example, Hogarth's 1730 painting shows a black pug in "House of Cards". Similarly everyone agrees that the Pug became the official dog of the House of Orange after saving the life of the Prince of Orange, by giving alarm at the approach of the Spaniards in 1572. Later when William of Orange went to England in 1688 to be crowned King William III, he took along several Pugs. So we know how the Pugs got from Holland to England but the controversy arises over how the breed got to Holland in the 16th century. One group of historians thinks the Pug was developed as a result of crossing several small Bulldogs. Another group thinks it is a miniature form of the rare French mastiff called the Dogue de Bordeaux. However the majority of historians think that the Pug originated in China and was brought back to 16th century Holland by the Dutch East India Company traders. This is the history that we will assume is true. The Pug is of Chinese origin and its development seems to pre-date the Christian era. Early records indicate that there were three types of short-nosed dogs bred by the Chinese. They were the Lion Dog (probably the Shih Tzu), The Pekingese and the Foo Dog or Pug. These dogs became very popular with Chinese royalty and the Pug breed was highly prized by the Emperors of China and lived a pampered existence. In fact, ordinary citizens were not allowed to own them. However, European traders managed to obtain some Pugs and introduce them to Europe - particularly Portugal, Spain, Holland and England which were the home countries of the traders. There, these adorable little animals became the pampered favourites of many royal families. We mentioned earlier that William III and Mary introduced Pugs to Britain from Holland when they became King and Queen in 1688 and the little dogs became a favourite at the royal court. This small dog breed was also extremely popular in the European courts and was a favourite of Napoleon's wife, Queen Josephine of France. Later Queen Victoria of England succumbed to the Pugs charm and introduced several Pugs into her household. This British royalty love of Pugs continued down the line into the 20th century with the Duke of Windsor becoming a Pug owner. However by the time of Queen Victoria and her descendants, Pugs were no longer restricted to royalty. Members of the aristocracy became enamoured with Pugs as well.
Because the Pug was becoming very popular, English breeders were importing Pugs from other countries such as Russia, Austria and Holland. In 1860 British soldiers overran the Imperial palace in Peking and brought back a number of Pugs to England. The black Pug probably was imported at this time. Subsequent to this period, breeders established standards for the breed. In 1881, the Pug Dog Club of England was established and in 1883 the British Kennel Club formally recognized this breed club. By 1885, the Pug had been accepted for registration by the American Kennel Club but no national American breed club was created until 1931. How to Stop Your Puppy From Barking, Whining, and Howling Excessively
If the problem is not addressed and resolved right away, whining can turn into an inbuilt routine that is extremely frustrating and annoying. Many puppies use whining, howling and barking in order to get control of their owners.
There are several things that you can do to stop excessive whining. If you limit your puppy's movements to a crate or a small room, you should always take note of your puppy's whining. If they start to whine, you should immediately take them out to their designated toilet area.
At the same time you should also teach your puppy to accept separation and solitude. Familiarize your puppy with being left alone at times, even when you are at home. This will stop them from developing separation anxiety, as well as the problems that come with this. If you hear your puppy whining, you should also ensure that your puppy is comfortable. It may be that your puppy is thirsty, too hot, too cold, hungry, sick, uncomfortable - or maybe their toy is stuck under a piece of furniture.

One of the topics that always comes up when people think about getting a puppy is toilet training. How is it done? How long will it take? Will I be able to do it? These are normal and very significant questions to have when you think about puppies. Toilet training is the first and most important behavior that a puppy must learn in its young life.

Protect Your Pug This Holiday Season
You want your pug to be safe and happy all year long, but during the holidays you need to take special precautions for his safety. Holiday times can be hectic and you want to make sure that the basic needs of your pug are met. In your haste to buy gifts, decorate and party, don’t forget to make sure your pug gets fresh food and water as well as some attention!
The “end of year” holidays can pose particular hazards for your pug. One important thing you can do is to make sure your pug is safe when guests come over. If you will be having a party or dinner, the door may be opening quite often and you want to make sure your pet can’t run out unnoticed. Remember, all the unusual activity could be scary for your pug so make sure you secure him in a quite and safe part of the house before guests arrive. If you want to show him off, wait until all the guests are settled and bring him out when you know the activity level will be low and you can keep an eye on him. When you get busy again, make sure you put him back in his “safe place”.
This is important all year long, but especially during the holidays when hours may be cut short - make sure you check your vet's holiday hours and emergency contacts and have the information easily accessible.
Be careful when decorating your house especially with holiday plants. Your Pug may chew on household plants, and many, including mistletoe and some poinsettias, can make your pet very ill. Make sure your holiday greenery is out of your Pug’s reach.

Thinking ahead to New Years Eve, be aware that your Pug might become frightened by the traditional firecrackers and other noisy merriment. Some dogs may be severely traumatized by fireworks, be sure to leave them inside if you go out to celebrate.
